Around the Globe
Multicultural Dance Organization at Washington & Lee University

Our Mission

Our goal is to create space for Rockbridge County students and community members to share their cultural/traditional dances and music, and use dance as a vehicle to teach & celebrate cultural diversity. Our community members come from incredibly diverse backgrounds with beautiful cultural dances, music and fashion, and we're here to help them find a sense of familiarity and home.

Club members are exposed to various forms of artistic and musical traditions from countries worldwide through three pillars of programming: educational dance workshops, performance productions for cultural events, and the annual ATG Spring Festival. Our dance workshops are weekly programs taught by students, community members, and guest artists that explain the historical/cultural significance of a specific dance style and teach the core movements of that style. Our second pillar involves dedicated collaborations with other organizations to choreograph & produce dance performances for their cultural events & celebrations. The Spring Festival, our third pillar, is our largest annual event presenting an evening of cultural dances. This is a fully student-choreographed and produced event celebrating the beauty of the dance traditions and rituals of our diverse community members and partnering artists, and offering authentic catered foods from a variety of cultures.

All of Around the Globe's programming is free or pay-what-you-can. Our goal is to expand accessibility to cultural arts education and practice in the Rockbridge County region, thus our programming is available to anyone regardless of what or if they can pay. This work would not be possible without the generous funding and sponsorships of W&L's Executive Committee, Office of Student Affairs, Office of Inclusion & Engagement, and many other W&L departments and student groups.
